What it means when you sign
This article requires that the lease term be specified. If a lease is made without agreeing a term, or for an unspecified term, or if the term that one side claims cannot be proved, the lease is treated as made for the period set for paying the rent. It ends when that period expires if one party asks for that and has notified the other party that they do not wish to renew.
For a contract about to be signed, this article is relevant to the clause on duration. It means a lease with no clear term, or with a term that is hard to prove, falls back on the rent payment period. So a lease with monthly rent and no stated term is treated as a one-month lease, ending when that period expires if one side has given notice of not renewing. A written lease that states its term clearly avoids this fallback, and any notice of non-renewal needs to reach the other party.
