What it means when you sign
This article sets the starting rule that personal data may not be processed without the consent of its owner. It then lists cases that are excluded from that prohibition. These include processing needed to protect the public interest; data the data subject has made publicly known; legal claims or defence of rights, or judicial and security procedures; occupational or preventive medicine and health care; public health; archives and scientific, historical or statistical studies; protecting the interests of the data subject; employment and social security obligations and rights; performing a contract to which the data subject is a party, or taking steps at the data subject's request to conclude, amend or terminate a contract; fulfilling obligations the controller has under other laws; and other cases set by the executive regulations.
When you are about to sign a contract involving personal data, this article means consent is the default, and processing without it needs one of the listed grounds. A clause that lets a party use personal data for purposes beyond performing the contract, or for other purposes entirely, may run into this article if no listed case covers that use.
