What it means when you sign

A lease ends when the period fixed in the contract expires. No notice to vacate is needed for this to happen, unless the law or the agreement provides otherwise.

For a contract about to be signed, this article is relevant to the clause on duration, expiry and notice. It means a lease with a fixed term comes to an end at the end of that term by itself, and neither side has to send a notice to vacate for the lease to finish. The point matters for a tenant planning to stay on, since the lease does not carry on merely because no one sent a notice. It also matters for a landlord who expects a notice step. The lease can nevertheless say something different: a notice requirement in the contract, or a rule in the law, changes the position. When reading a lease, it is worth checking whether it contains any notice requirement before the end date, and how it deals with the tenant staying on after the term ends.
