What it means when you sign

When a contract is valid and binding, neither party can take back their commitment, change the terms, or cancel the contract on their own. The article names only three routes: both sides agree, a court decides, or a provision of law allows it.

For a contract about to be signed, this article means that the starting point is that a binding contract is not changed or ended by one party alone. Clauses that let one side alter prices, scope or conditions by its own notice, or end the contract whenever it chooses, are the clauses to read closely, because they sit in tension with this rule. A change or cancellation that both parties agree to, that a court orders, or that a legal provision permits is what the article itself recognises. It is worth noting who holds the power to change or end the contract in each clause, and whether the other side's agreement is required.
